ܘܐܡܪ ܡܪܝܐ ܠܫܡܘܐܝܠ ܥܕܡܐ ܠܐܡܬܝ ܡܬܐܒܠ ܐܢܬ ܥܠ ܫܐܘܠ ܘܐܢܐ ܐܣܠܝܬܗ ܕܠܐ ܢܡܠܟ ܥܠ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܡܠܝ ܩܪܢܟ ܡܫܚܐ ܘܬܐ ܐܫܕܪܟ ܠܘܬ ܐܝܫܝ ܕܡܢ ܒܝܬ ܠܚܡ ܡܛܠ ܕܚܙܝܬ ܠܝ ܒܒܢ̈ܘܗܝ ܡܠܟܐ

Yahweh said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided a king for myself among his sons.”

ܘܐܡܪ ܫܡܘܐܝܠ ܐܝܟܢܐ ܐܙܠ ܘܢܫܡܥ ܫܐܘܠ ܘܢܩܛܠܢܝ ܘܐܡܪ ܡܪܝܐ ܠܫܡܘܐܝܠ ܥܓܠܬܐ ܕܬܘܪܐ ܐܚܘܕ ܒܐܝܕܟ ܘܐܡܪ ܠܡܕܒܚܘ ܠܡܪܝܐ ܐܬܝܬ

Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me.” Yahweh said, “Take a heifer with you, and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to Yahweh.’

ܘܩܪܝ ܠܐܝܫܝ ܠܕܒܚܐ ܘܐܢܐ ܐܚܘܝܟ ܡܕܡ ܕܬܥܒܕ ܘܡܫܘܚ ܠܝ ܠܡ̇ܢ ܕܐܡܪ ܠܟ

Call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do. You shall anoint to me him whom I name to you.”

ܘܥܒܕ ܫܡܘܐܝܠ ܐܝܟ ܕܦܩܕܗ ܡܪܝܐ ܘܐܬܐ ܠܒܝܬ ܠܚܡ ܕܝܗܘܕܐ ܘܢܦܩܘ ܣ̈ܒܐ ܕܩܪܝܬܐ ܠܐܘܪܥܗ

Samuel did that which Yahweh spoke, and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city came to meet him trembling, and said, “Do you come peaceably?”

ܘܐܡܪܘ ܫܠܡ ܡܐܬܝܟ ܘܐܡܪ ܫܠܡ ܠܡܕܒܚܘ ܠܡܪܝܐ ܐܬܝܬ ܐܬܩܕܫܘ ܘܬܘ ܥܡܝ ܠܕܒܚܐ ܘܩܕܫ ܠܐܝܫܝ ܘܠܒ̈ܢܘܗܝ ܘܩܪܐ ܐܢܘܢ ܠܕܒܚܐ
ldbkh' 'nwn wqr' wlbnwhy l'yshy wqdsh ldbkh' emy wthw 'thqdshw 'thyth lmry' lmdbkhw shlm w'mr m'thyk shlm w'mrw
He said, “Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to Yahweh. Sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice.” He sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.

ܘܟܕ ܐܬܘ ܚܙܐ ܠܐܠܝܒ ܘܐܡܪ ܐܟܘܬܗ ܕܡܪܝܐ ܡܫܝܚܗ

When they had come, he looked at Eliab, and said, “Surely Yahweh’s anointed is before him.”

ܘܐܡܪ ܡܪܝܐ ܠܫܡܘܐܝܠ ܠܐ ܬܚܘܪ ܒܚܙܘܗ ܘܒܪܘܡܐ ܕܩܘܡܬܗ ܡܛܠ ܕܐܣܠܝܬܗ ܠܐ ܗܘܝܬ ܓܝܪ ܐܝܟ ܕܚ̇ܙܐ ܐܢܫܐ ܡܛܠ ܕܐܢܫܐ ܚ̇ܙܐ ܒܥܝ̈ܢܐ ܘܡܪܝܐ ܚ̇ܙܐ ܒܠܒܐ

But Yahweh said to Samuel, “Don’t look on his face, or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for I don’t see as man sees. For man looks at the outward appearance, but Yahweh looks at the heart.”

ܘܩܪܐ ܐܝܫܝ ܠܐܒܝܢܕܒ ܘܐܥܒܪܗ ܩܕܡ ܫܡܘܐܝܠ ܘܐܡܪ ܐܦ ܒܗܢܐ ܠܐ ܨ̇ܒܐ ܡܪܝܐ

Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. He said, “Yahweh has not chosen this one, either.”

ܘܐܥܒܪ ܐܝܫܝ ܠܫܡܐ ܘܐܡܪ ܐܦ ܠܐ ܒܗܢܐ ܨܒ̇ܐ ܡܪܝܐ

Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. He said, “Yahweh has not chosen this one, either.”

ܘܐܥܒܪ ܐܝܫܝ ܠܫܒܥܐ ܒܢ̈ܘܗܝ ܩܕܡ ܫܡܘܐܝܠ ܘܐܡܪ ܫܡܘܐܝܠ ܠܐܝܫܝ ܠܐ ܨܒ̇ܐ ܡܪܝܐ ܒܗܠܝܢ
bhlyn mry' tsb' l' l'yshy shmw'yl w'mr shmw'yl qdm bnwhy lshbe' 'yshy w'ebr
Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. Samuel said to Jesse, “Yahweh has not chosen these.”

ܘܐܡܪ ܫܡܘܐܝܠ ܠܐܝܫܝ ܫܠܡܘ ܛ̈ܠܝܐ ܘܐܡܪ ܠܗ ܙܥܘܪܐ ܐܫܬܚܪ ܘܗܐ ܪܥ̇ܐ ܥܢܐ ܘܐܡܪ ܫܡܘܐܝܠ ܠܐܝܫܝ ܫܕܪ ܕܒܪܝܗܝ ܡܛܠ ܕܠܐ ܐܗܦܘܟ ܥܕܡܐ ܕܢܐܬܐ ܠܗܪܟܐ

Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all your children here?” He said, “There remains yet the youngest. Behold, he is keeping the sheep.” Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and get him, for we will not sit down until he comes here.”

ܘܫܕܪ ܐܝܬܝܗ ܘܗܘ ܣܡܩܪܝ ܘܫܦܝܪ̈ܢ ܥܝܢ̈ܘܗܝ ܘܫܦܝܪ ܚܙܘܗ ܘܐܡܪ ܡܪܝܐ ܠܫܡܘܐܝܠ ܩܘܡ ܡܫܘܚܝܗܝ ܡܛܠ ܕܗܢܘ

He sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, with a handsome face and good appearance. Yahweh said, “Arise! Anoint him, for this is he.”

ܘܢܣܒ ܫܡܘܐܝܠ ܩܪܢܐ ܕܡܫܚܐ ܘܡܫܚܗ ܒܓܘ ܐܚ̈ܘܗܝ ܘܐܨܠܚܬ ܪܘܚܗ ܕܡܪܝܐ ܥܠ ܕܘܝܕ ܡܢ ܗ̇ܘ ܝܘܡܐ ܘܩܕܡ ܫܡܘܐܝܠ ܘܐܙܠ ܠܪܡܬܐ ܠܒܝܬܗ

Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the middle of his brothers. Then Yahweh’s Spirit came mightily on David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.

ܘܪܘܚܗ ܕܐܠܗܐ ܥܒܪܬ ܡܢ ܫܐܘܠ ܘܡܕܝܒܐ ܠܗ ܪܘܚܐ ܒܝܫܬܐ ܡܢ ܩܕܡ ܡܪܝܐ

Now Yahweh’s Spirit departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from Yahweh troubled him.

ܘܐܡܪܘ ܠܗ ܥܒ̈ܕܘܗܝ ܠܫܐܘܠ

Saul’s servants said to him, “See now, an evil spirit from God troubles you.

ܗܐ ܥܒ̈ܕܝܟ ܩܕܡܝܟ ܢܒܥܘܢ ܓܒܪܐ ܕܝܕܥ̇ ܠܡܩܫ ܒܟܢܪܐ ܘܡܐ ܕܗܘܝܐ ܥܠܝܟ ܪܘܚܐ ܒܝܫܬܐ ܢܩܘܫ ܒܐ̈ܝܕܘܗܝ ܘܢܛܐܒ ܠܟ
lk wnT'b b'ydwhy nqwsh byshth' rwkh' elyk dhwy' wm' bknr' lmqsh dyde gbr' nbewn qdmyk ebdyk h'
Let our lord now command your servants who are in front of you to seek out a man who is a skillful player on the harp. Then when the evil spirit from God is on you, he will play with his hand, and you will be well.”

ܘܐܡܪ ܫܐܘܠ ܠܥ̈ܒܕܘܗܝ ܚܙܘ ܠܝ ܓܒܪܐ ܕܫܦܝܪ ܢܩ̇ܫ ܘܐܝܬܐܘܗܝ ܠܘܬܝ

Saul said to his servants, “Provide me now a man who can play well, and bring him to me.”

ܘܥܢܐ ܚܕ ܡܢ ܥܠܝܡ̈ܐ ܘܐܡܪ ܗܐ ܚܙܝܬ ܒܪܐ ܠܐܝܫܝ ܕܡܢ ܒܝܬ ܠܚܡ ܘܝܕܥ̇ ܠܡܩܫ ܘܓܢܒܪ ܚܝܠܗ ܘܓܒܪܐ ܗܘ ܩܪܒܬܢܐ ܘܡܬܒܝܢ ܒܡܠܬܐ ܘܚܙܘܗ ܫܦܝܪ ܘܡܪܝܐ ܥܡܗ

Then one of the young men answered and said, “Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite who is skillful in playing, a mighty man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a handsome person; and Yahweh is with him.”

ܘܫܕܪ ܫܐܘܠ ܡܠܟܐ ܠܘܬ ܐܝܫܝ ܘܐܡܪ ܠܗ ܫܕܪ ܠܝ ܠܕܘܝܕ ܒܪܟ ܚܫ̇ܚ ܠܝ

Therefore Saul sent messengers to Jesse, and said, “Send me David your son, who is with the sheep.”

ܘܕܒܪ ܐܝܫܝ ܚܡܪܐ ܘܐܛܥܢ ܠܚܡܐ ܘܙܩܐ ܕܚܡܪܐ ܘܓܕܝܐ ܚܕ ܕܥ̈ܙܐ ܘܫܕܪ ܒܐܝܕܗ ܕܕܘܝܕ ܒܪܗ ܠܫܐܘܠ

Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread, a container of wine, and a young goat, and sent them by David his son to Saul.

ܘܐܬܐ ܕܘܝܕ ܠܘܬ ܫܐܘܠ ܘܩܡ ܩܕܡܘܗܝ ܘܪܚܡܗ ܛܒ ܘܗܘܐ ܠܗ ܫܩ̇ܠ ܡܐ̈ܢܐ

David came to Saul and stood before him. He loved him greatly; and he became his armor bearer.

ܘܫܠܚ ܫܐܘܠ ܠܐܝܫܝ ܘܐܡܪ ܠܗ ܢܩܘܡ ܕܘܝܕ ܩܕܡܝ ܡܛܠ ܕܐܫܟܚ ܪ̈ܚܡܐ ܒܥܝܢ̈ܝ

Saul sent to Jesse, saying, “Please let David stand before me, for he has found favor in my sight.”

ܘܡܐ ܕܗܘܝܐ ܪܘܚܗ ܕܡܪܝܐ ܒܝܫܬܐ ܥܠ ܫܐܘܠ ܢܣ̇ܒ ܕܘܝܕ ܘܢܩ̇ܫ ܒܟܢܪܐ ܘܡܪܘܚ ܠܫܐܘܠ ܘܡܛܐܒ ܠܗ ܘܥܒܪܐ ܡܢܗ ܪܘܚܐ ܒܝܫܬܐ

When the spirit from God was on Saul, David took the harp and played with his hand; so Saul was refreshed and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.
